William Ryan Storey

Bill Storey, 82, of Kingwood, Texas passed away January 9, 2019. He was born in Butler, PA on July 20, 1936, son of Maxine McCullough and William Ryan Storey, I.

Growing up in Chicora, PA, Bill loved all sports, especially basketball and baseball. If the school gym was closed, Bill played basketball in a frozen, cold barn. Bill earned an athletic scholarship to University of West Virginia, but later transferred to play basketball for Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA. While at Westminster, Bill majored in Chemistry and was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. In his senior year Bill met Linda Walker, a freshman. They were married in June, 1961 after Linda’s graduation. While obtaining his Masters degree in Education, Bill taught Chemistry and coached boys basketball at various high schools in western PA.

He later joined Humble Oil and Refining, which brought Bill and Linda to the Houston area. After leaving Exxon, Bill became an entrepreneur and owned small businesses in retail oil and gas.

Passionate about supporting his daughters’ interests in competitive swimming, Bill was instrumental in starting Blue Tide Aquatics, the first US Swimming club in Kingwood.

In 1989 Bill and Linda began spending their summers in Chautauqua, New York, where they developed many treasured friendships. Following retirement, Bill accepted a position coaching boys basketball at The Woodlands Christian Academy. This was a return to his favorite profession and passion, coaching basketball. His later years were enlivened with travel abroad and many celebrations.

Bill will be remembered as a wise, thoughtful, and optimistic man. He had a great sense of humor, a ready smile and rock-solid integrity. He cared for many people and especially found his KUMC family to be a very important part of his life.

Bill is survived by his wife of 57 years and best friend, Linda; daughter Anne and son-in-law Bob Patterson; daughter Mia Storey; grandchildren James (Trace) Williams III, Ryan Patterson, Rachel Patterson, and William Dunn; sisters-in-law Betty A. Storey, Mary Walker Dickson, Jane Walker; niece Laura Storey and nephew David Storey; nephews Dr. James Humphrey and Dr. Mitch Humphrey; nephew Marc Dickson, nieces Jody Flecken and Erinn Sentner-Mule’.

Bill was predeceased by his parents and brother, Dr. James David Storey.

Bill’s ashes will be interred in Pennsylvania. In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions in Bill’s name may be directed to KUMC Foundation, 1799 Woodland Hills Drive, Kingwood TX 77339 or the charity of one’s choice.

Bill will be greatly missed by their cat, Frankie.

Linda, so sorry to hear of Bill’s death. I was at CHQ this week alone because Glenn died in June. I missed you and Bill then heard that he had died. Glenn and he touched base on basketball some years back in discussing put grandson, a good player attend in Christian school on GA
Glenn was unable to come to CHW the,past 3 years due to his,form of PD. Accept my condolences. Bill was a gem in our estimation
