Karen was born to Harry D. and Sina B. Long in Jacksonville, FL and grew up with her younger siblings Kathy and Mark in Brunswick on the beautiful coast of Georgia. She graduated from Glynn Academy High School, Brunswick Jr.(now Coastal) College, and the University of Georgia.
She taught middle school students with special needs for 30 years in Covington, GA, Spring, TX and at Kingwood and Creekwood Middle Schools in Humble ISD, retiring in 2004.
Karen married John (Jack) Eastman from New Albany, IN in 1976 and moved to Kingwood in 1981. They also lived in Atlanta, Pittsburgh & Houston.

Karen passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on December 6, 2022. She is predeceased by her husband Jack, parents Harry and Sina Long, brother Mark Long, and sister Camille McDougald. She is survived by her sister Kathy Long and cousins in Jacksonville, Jack’s children Ann (Pat) Kerchner in Conroe and their family; Julia (Robert) Pike in Kingwood and their family; Reid (Lana) Eastman in New Caney and their family; niece April (Scot) Howard and nephew Scott (Dawn) McDougald and their children, all in the Athens, GA area.
Visitation will be held at Darst Funeral Home, located at 796 Russell Palmer Road, Kingwood, TX 77339 on Friday, December 9, 2022 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
There will be a memorial service to follow at First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood located at 5520 Kingwood Drive, Kingwood, TX 77345 on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 10 a.m.
Visitation: Friday 12/9/2022 5-7 PM

I enjoyed my visits and monthly phone calls with Karen. She was a comfort during a rough time for me. I will miss her so. Karen was genuinely kind. Heaven gained another Angel.

Hello Julie…..forgive me….but like Jack’s viewing I don’t think I would have lasted long seeing Karen in a Casket. If Bill and I arrived before anyone else but you and your family I could have done it. There is a special piece of my heart that only Karen could fill. We will definitely come to Karen’s Celebration Of Life I have three short but funny things to share about Karen and our times together. She was such a Godly example to me as the Bible instructs those older than us to teach us. She taught me a lot about a lot! God alway’s surrounded her during our 13 years of deeply cherished times we got together. You could actually see the Glory of God in her eyes until she could open them no more. Even when dying you could sense the presence of God’s angels. Our Lord gave me the most remarkable unexpected gift alone with Karen. Kathy and of course dear Sarah.we’re there. Karen had stopped eating, and had to be put on Oxygen and pain medicine. She couldn’t respond to any stimuli. I knew a way into her heart and mind because we both loved the amazing old Hymns. So I downloaded on my iPhone a soft a dear Hymn….a gentle uplifting one. I held my phone near her ear but not loud. She stirred. Her left hand slowly but weakly came out from the covers a bit trying to keep time with the music…..and then her mouth tried to sing for she knew this tune. In her heart I knew she was singing that Hymn. I will never ever forget that unexpected Holy special gift the Lord bestowed upon me. Oh Jesus thank you….but mostly thank you for winding mine and Karen’s friendship in an embroidered lovely gift we offered up to you. Karen…Jack….catch you in Heaven one day!

Even though almost two months have passed since Karen went home, I still see her face so clearly. I miss her gentle caring ways, and learned so much about making people feel seen, simply by watching her. She also had a fire in her belly if she spotted injustice. I can remember a time when we both visited a friend in a facility. We found her in deep need of care, and within seconds, Karen had two caregivers in there taking care of our friend. Amazing lady, who saw need in others that most could never see.
