OBITUARY

Diane Carol Kaplan passed away in her home on the 2nd of July, 2021 at the age of 75 in Atascocita, Texas. Diane was born to Phil and Ruth Hoffman in Cleveland, Ohio on November 20th, 1945. She has an older sister Linda Lefkowitz-formerly a judge in Santa Monica, and a twin brother Alan Hoffman-formerly a children’s dentist in Merced, California.

Diane met her first husband, Fred Kaplan, at the Jewish Young Adult Center on Santa Monica Blvd. Diane attended Santa Monica City College and worked as an Xray technician at UCLA. In fact, she gave Fred an Xray to check his health before they married. Diane and Fred shared 24 years of marriage in West Hills, California until their divorce in 1991. They had two children together, Robert and Dennis Kaplan. After her kids were born, Diane went to work for the Carlsons at Century 21 as a receptionist, and later got her license to sell real estate. Although her career as a real estate agent didn’t go as planned, after her divorce, Diane moved to Cathedral City-Palm Springs, California where she continued to work in the field of real estate as an escrow officer. She continued to live for many years in Palm Springs with her life partner John DeMattio. After John passed away, Diane moved to the Houston area to be closer to her family.

Diane was a social butterfly and a free spirit who made it her business to make friends, and to know all that she could about the people around her. She loved Italiano’s restaurant, wine, Las Vegas and Frank Sinatra music. She was an enthusiastic sports fan, especially golf and football. Her hobbies included gambling and cooking- we loved her shrimp scampi and Matzo Ball soup. She was generous with her love and time and an essential part of our family. She was always bold and spoke her mind.

Diane leaves behind her brother Alan and Georgina Hoffman and sister Linda Lefkowitz, and her first husband Frank Kaplan. Her son Robert and his wife Tessa Kaplan of Crosby, TX and their children Seth and Natasha. Her son Dennis and his wife Leslie Kaplan of San Antonio, TX and their children Ashley and Piper. She also leaves behind a daughter, Stacy Meyer and grandchild Shelbi.

  1. unfortunately not well but have spent these past days with wonderful memories of Diane–we shared a bedroom as children and I stilll have memories of how we shared a bedroom and hid comic books from our mom so we could read them with flashlights in bed at night!

  2. I miss my dear neighbor every day. Loved our conversations and her sass! Rest in peace, Diane. My deepest condolences to the family.
