Gillow, Doris M.

OBITUARY

Doris Marie Gillow, of Kingwood TX passed away March 3rd, 2021 peacefully at her home in Reunion Court of Kingwood.  Doris was born in 1933 at her parents’ home in Staten Island, NY, to her now late parents Margaret and Frank Shodoski.  .

Doris was married for 48 years to Robert (Bob) Gillow of Staten Island, NY, and moved with him to Kingwood, TX in 2000, where they lived together for 7 years before his passing. In September 2000, Doris suffered a life-altering stroke, which led to their move from New York, but simultaneously allowed for Doris and Bob to be closer to their only daughter, Robin (Gillow) Darcy, and their four grandchildren Sean, Katie, Ryan and Timothy.

Doris was a proud New Yorker, and a life long New York Yankee fan and always reminded her Texas friends of where she came from whenever she could.  While living in New York, Doris created a 40 year career as a bankteller, starting at Richmond County Savings Bank  in 1951 immediately after graduating from Port Richmond High School, and then transitioning to Citibank until she retired in 1991. Realizing that retired life was not for her, she returned to work 6 months later, and worked in the catalogue department at JCPenney for 9 years before her move to Texas.

When not working, or attending and supporting her grandchildren’s activities, Doris loved to go on casino trips to Atlantic City, NJ.  After moving to Texas, and no longer able to travel to casinos, Doris made sure to participate in daily bingo games, bus trips to community outings, and weekly restaurant trips with her neighbors. Her quick wit and (sometimes inappropriate) jokes were always appreciated by those that understood her unique sense of humor, and those that didn’t got the middle finger.

Besides her husband Bob and her parents, Margaret and Frank, Doris is also preceded in death by her brother William (Bill) Shodoski, her grandson Timothy Darcy, and her son-in-law Tom Darcy, who she always treated as a son. She is survived by her only daughter Robin, her grandchildren, Sean, Katelyn and Ryan, and her sister Helen Diehl, of Mt. Dora, Florida.

A visitation will be held for Doris on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 from 4pm until 6 pm at Darst Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Martha’s Catholic Church on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at 11:30 am, with interment to follow at Houston National Cemetery.
