Funeral Etiquette

Every service is unique, but the tips outlined below will give you an idea of polite funeral etiquette.

  • Express Your Sympathy: Sign the online guestbook linked through this website or send your expressions of sympathy directly to Darst Funeral Home to be delivered to the family. Flowers or plants are a very traditional way to show your sympathy and these can be ordered directly through Darst Funeral Home for your convenience. However, be sure to follow the family’s wishes should they request donations to a charity in lieu of flowers.
  • Be on time: Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to a service to ensure that you can take your seat in plenty of time. You can be seated before it begins.
  • Dress Appropriately: Unless otherwise requested by the family, a dark suit or blazer for gentlemen and a modest business-appropriate dress or slacks for a lady are recommended. Although black is still acceptable, other colors or patterns are also accectable as long as they do not draw too much attention or show too much skin. Be sure to check if any portion of the service will be outdoors and to dress accordingly.
  • Offer Your Support: Being present and being a good listener are the most important comforts you can offer. A simple, heart-felt “I’m so sorry. I’m here if you need anything” will go a long way.
